Fujifilm X-T1 is finally announced today on the 28th January 2014

Finally, it’s official announced – to not much surprise though, since the new Fujifilm X-T1 camera is one of the most leaked cameras, with photos and specs well available to the general public over the past few weeks.

It’s significant that a Fujifilm X camera is touting operational speed among its many attributes, as most of the X cameras so far aren’t speed demons. The X-T1 has also gained the SLR-esque hump that seems to be all the rage now, heralded in first by the 2012 OMD-EM5 and followed on by the OMD-EM1 and the Sony A7 and A7R.

The Fujifilm X-T1 features a retro design reminiscent of the small metal film SLRs of the past.

Notable features I gleaned from the specs are:

– Viewfinder hump (don’t laugh – I actually like the looks of this camera)
– Large 0.77x magnification EVF, bigger than even the 1DX’s and also the E-M1’s….
– World’s fastest AF speed – well this claim needs to be validated….
– Phase detection AF and motion predictive AF for continuous shooting up to 8 frames per second and overall speed and responsiveness

A large 0.77x magnification EVF promises a large, no-compromise view surpassing optical viewfinders.

– Tough, weather resistant design with matching optional grip: this is very welcome for a body with pro-level aspirations
– Traditional handling with shutter speed dial, Exposure compensation dial, ISO dial, Metering dial and Drive mode dials all located on the top plate, plus a variety of customizable buttons. This reminds me of why I loved the original X100 and have been a fan of Fujifilm since. A real photographer’s camera.

Here’s the official statement to make it, well, official. Our writeup and review of this new camera is forthcoming – watch out for it!

YS: Oh wow, I really like what Fujifilm have done. There are a few niggles, like 1/180 flash sync and a top shutter speed of 1/4000, but at the same time, the promise of properly fast autofocus along with some nice weather resistant f/2.8 zoom lenses might move the X system out of “niche tool” into “proper all-round tool”. I hope we can spend some quality time with this camera soon!
