It’s PMA season! Well, kinda. Now that the PMA show has merged with CES, it means that what is left of PMA is usually dedicated to consumer cameras. So here is something fairly consumer-ish: New Nikon 1 cameras. Hey you! Don’t yawn! Be glad we’re not covering all the uninteresting compacts!

Now, I’m not really against the Nikon 1s in general other than their price, but Nikon are like headless chickens here. Refreshing the J series again? Especially when the J2 was announced less than six months ago, in August of 2012. Nikon should have just passed over the J2 and launched this instead: This is basically a smaller J2 with the mode dial moved to the top, in a less likely to be nudged position flushed with the top plate, and equipped with the V2’s 14.6 megapixel sensor. All the high speed goodness in the 1 series are still in there, with high speed capture of 15 FPS in continuous AF along with the only decent hybrid phase-detect and contrast-detect AF system. The J3 will be available in the US in February for US$600 with the 10-30/3.5-5.6 VR lens. Ouch. Nikon still needs to learn to price this right.

Nikon 1 S1

The S1 is basically a warmed over J1/J2 with a body that’s only so very slightly bigger than the J3. It has the older 10 megapixel sensor and a HVGA instead of a full VGA screen, but other than that, it seems very identical to the J3. The S1 will go on sale in February as well, for US$500, but this time, it will come with the smaller and cheaper 11-27/3.5-5.6 non-VR lens. I really am not sure if overall, that US$100 is going to make that much of a difference between two rather overpriced cameras. Remember, Nikon designed the 1s to be manufactured as cheaply as possible.

As for the two lenses, the first is a 10-100mm f/4-5.6 10x zoom lens that gives a 35mm FOV equivalent of 27-270mm, and the 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6, which gives a 18-35mm equivalent. The former will cost US$550, and the latter US$500.
